Yemen Security Brief

• The wife of AQAP deputy leader Said al Shihri appealed to Muslim women, particularly in Saudi Arabia, to travel to Yemen to wage jihad. Wafa al Shihri, also known as Umm Hajir al Azadiya, wrote her message in the most recent issue of the online magazine “Sada al-Malahim,” or “Echo of the Epics.”[1]

• The Yemeni government captured nearly 400 Ethiopians crossing illegally into Yemen in April. This continues a 2010 trend of increasing illegal movement of Ethiopians into Yemen, which is already burdened with a Somali refugee problem.[2]

• A roadside bomb killed a Ugandan AMISOM soldier in Mogadishu Thursday. The soldier was on a patrol near the seaport when the bomb struck his convoy.[3]

• Al Shabaab warned Kenya against intervening in Somalia and accused it of sending troops into the country’s southern Jubba regions.[4]

• Fighting between al Shabaab militants and TFG forces killed two civilians and wounded several others in northern Mogadishu Friday.[5]

• The body of a young man was discovered near an Ahlu Sunna wa al Jama’a base in Mogadishu. No group has claimed responsibility for his killing.[6]

• Germany requested that pirates taken by Dutch marines in April be tried in Hamburg because they were detained aboard a German container ship.[7]
