Musharraf Trial

  • According to a Tuesday report in The Los Angeles Times, former President Pervez Musharraf may leave Pakistan within the next few days. The report quoted a senior security official who said that “it is good for everybody – including Musharraf – that he would go out of the country.”[1]

  • On Tuesday, Pakistan’s Defense Secretary Lieutenant General (retired) Asif Yasin Malik stated that the Pakistani Army has no connection with or an interest in the trial of former president Pervez Musharraf, and that he was not aware that Musharraf sought the army’s help in his case.[2]

  • On Tuesday, the special treason court granted Musharraf a two-day exemption from appearing in court after receiving the former president’s medical report. According to a Tuesday article in the New York Times, the court will decide on Thursday whether the hearing can continue if Musharraf is not present.[3]

Lashkar-e-Taiba Recruitment

  • On Tuesday, the Delhi Police’s Special Cell reported that terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has been attempting to recruit Indian operatives in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, India. According to the police, two men arrested in connection with recruitment activities, Mohammadd Rashid and Mohammad Shahid, have been recruiting in Muzaffarnagar at the behest of LeT leader Abdul Subhan.  The Indian Home Ministry has asked for more evidence on the subject.[4]

Militancy

  • On Wednesday, unidentified gunmen killed one police officer and injured four others in two separate incidents in Peshawar.[5]

  • On Tuesday, unidentified gunmen killed a Shia bank manager in what police described as a targeted sectarian attack in Peshawar.[6]

  • On Tuesday, gunmen killed the former deputy administrative officer of Shahdara in Mingora City, Swat district, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP).[7]

  • On Wednesday, security forces in Manatu, Kurram agency seized an arms cache, which included ammunition, machine guns, and mortar shells.[8]

  • On Tuesday, a bomb blast in Bahadur Banda, Hangu district, KP damaged the house of an Orakzai Levies official, but caused no casualties.[9]

  • On Wednesday, the chief of a Shia congregation hall was shot and injured by unidentified gunmen in the Sadiqabad area of Rawalpindi.[10]

  • On Tuesday, a shootout between unidentified militants and security forces killed a policeman, a member of the Frontier Corps (Balochistan), and one of the militants, and injured three in Panjgur district, Balochistan.[11]

Domestic

  • On Wednesday, the Privatisation Commission approved the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines, Heavy Electrical Complex, and the National Power Construction Company.[12]
