Yemen Security Brief

• The leader of the al Houthi movement, Abdul Malik al Houthi, spoke on Yemeni television on July 9 regarding the al Houthi takeover of Amran. In the statement, Abdul Malik accuses the al Islah party of breaking a previous ceasefire and of cooperating with the Islamic State.[1]

• The Yemeni military reportedly shelled the house of an al Houthi leader on July 10 in al Ghayl, al Jawf. The shelling led to clashes between the military and al Houthis, resulting in an unknown number of casualties.[2]

• Unidentified gunmen attacked a residence in Sheikh Osman, Aden on July 10, resulting in no casualties.[3]

Horn of Africa Security Brief

• The Kenyan police and Defense Forces reportedly arrested 69 people on July 9 in Tana and Lamu in Kenya’s Coast Province. The arrests targeted those suspected of carrying out the July 5 attack in Gamba and Hindi in Kenya’s Coast Province that killed 22 people.[4]

• The Kenyan government charged Lamu businessman, Mahadi Swaleh Mahadi, on July 9 with 65 counts of murder related to the June 15 and 16 Mpeketoni attack in Kenya’s Coas Province. [5]

• Clashes between rival clans over farmland killed ten people in Beledweyn, Hiran region, Somalia on July 10.[6]
