Yemen: Al Houthis announce formation of interim body to govern country; suspected Ansar al Sharia militants detonate an IED in Sada’a; unidentified militants attack al Houthi and military forces in Dhaleh

Horn of Africa: Car bomb detonates in Mogadishu; grenade attack in North Eastern region, Kenya

Yemen Security Brief

  • The al Houthis announced on February 6 the dissolution of parliament and the formation of a 551-member interim National Council to solve Yemen’s political crisis. The interim council will be overseen by the al Houthi’s Revolutionary Committee and will elect a five-member presidential council to fill Yemen’s executive branch.[1]
  • Suspected Ansar al Sharia militants detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in Razih, Sada’a on February 6. The IED targeted the convoy of the province’s governor, Mohammed Awad Jabar. One person was injured in the attack.[2]
  • Unidentified militants attacked al Houthi militants and the Yemeni 33rd Armored Brigade in al Jamarook, Dhaleh on February 6. There were no casualties reported in the attack.[3]

Horn of Africa Security Brief

  • A car bomb detonated in Mogadishu’s Karan neighborhood killing one and injuring six bystanders on February 4. The bomb was placed in a government official’s car but he escaped unharmed. No group has claimed credit for the attack.[4]
  • Unknown assailants carried out a grenade attack in Mandera, North Eastern Province, Kenya on February 5. Three people were injured.[5]
