Yemen: UN talks between al Houthis and Hadi’s government still set for June 15; popular resistance forces use artillery to bomb al Houthi convoy

Yemen Security Brief

• Both the al Houthis and Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s government are expected to attend UN-sponsored political talks in Geneva on June 15, although the likelihood of a political agreement from the talks remains slim. UN Special Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed sated that both sides will not initially sit at the same negotiating table.[1]

• Anti-al Houthi  popular resistance forces bombed using artillery fire an al Houthi convoy carrying ammunition in al Makhdarah,  Ma’rib, on June 11.[2]

Horn of Africa Security Brief

• Fighting resulting from a June 11 al Shabaab attack on an Ethiopian African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) convoy in the Bay region continued into its second day. Al Shabaab reports that the militants have killed at least 30 Ethiopian soldiers and destroyed seven vehicles. Ethiopia and AMISOM have not yet released statements.[3]

• Kenyan authorities announced that they will soon begin to restrict the movement of Somali refugees living in the Dadaab refugee camp, citing concerns that residents may be supporting al Shabaab. Only residents requiring specialized medical attention or taking a university entrance exam will be permitted to leave the camp.[4]
