Horn of Africa: Vice president of ASWJ-proclaimed state avoids arrest in Galgudud

Yemen Security Brief

  • Islamic State in Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) Wilayat Hadramawt militants raided the Hazir barracks in Thamoud, Hadramawt, near the Saudi Arabian border, on August 20. The attack killed four Yemeni soldiers. The attack is the farthest east in Yemen an ISIS Wilayat has claimed an attack.[1]
  • Unidentified militants detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at the office of the governor of Aden in Aden, southern Yemen, on August 20.  The blast killed four people.[2]

Horn of Africa Security Brief

  • Police from the Somali government-backed central Galmudug state attempted to arrest the Ahlu Sunna wa al Jama’a (ASWJ) vice president of the region in Adado, Galgudud region, on August 20. The police accused Vice President Abdullahi Hersi Diirshe of stalling talks between the ASWJ and the Somali government. ASWJ claimed control of Galmudug’s capital, Dhusamareb, in June.[3]
