Yemen: Al Houthis fire missiles into Saudi Arabian territory; Popular Resistance forces seize territory near Ibb city

Horn of Africa: AMISOM confirms troops involved in July 31 deaths of Marka civilians

Yemen Security Brief

  • Al Houthi militants alleged they had fired a Tochka ballistic missile at a Saudi military base in Jizan on August 20. The al Houthis have claimed they have destroyed 32 Saudi tanks, 30 armored personnel carriers, and 111 vehicles in the Saudi provinces of Asir, Jizan, and Najran over the past four months.[1]
  • Popular Resistance forces seized al Tabab overlooking Ibb city, central Yemen, on August 21 from al Houthi militants. Resistance forces reported that they were able to push the al Houthis west toward al Udayn, Ibb.[2]

Horn of Africa Security Brief

  • The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Special Representative to Somalia, Maman Sidikou, released a statement on August 21 addressing the July 31 shooting deaths of civilians in Marka, Lower Shabelle region. The statement indicates that AMISOM found seven civilians died during an incident involving AMISOM troops and that the mission has since arrested the troops. AMISOM is also accused of killing civilians in Marka on July 21, which the statement did not address.[3]
