Key takeaway: The Foreign Ministry announced that Iran will take “proportionate legal, consular, and political action” in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order banning Iranian nationals from entering the U.S.
The Foreign Ministry criticized the ban in a statement released on January 28. Trump’s executive order prevents nationals of Iran and six other Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. for at least 90 days. The Foreign Ministry’s statement also noted that Iran will “take reciprocal measures” until the Trump administration lifts the ban. The statement did not specify what those measures will be, however.
American officials told Fox News that Iran tested a ballistic missile on January 29. The officials specified that the Khorramshahr medium-range ballistic missile exploded in a “failed test of a reentry vehicle” after 600 miles of flight. Defense Minister IRGC Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan unveiled the Khorramshahr missile in September 2016 and described it as a “high-precision missile.” It is unclear whether the test violated U.N. resolution 2231, which endorsed the nuclear agreement and calls upon Iran to refrain from activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons. It was Iran’s first test of a ballistic missile under Trump’s administration. The test is likely aimed at testing the Trump administration’s stance toward Iran and the nuclear deal.

Defense Minister IRGC Brig. Gen. Mohammad Hossein Dehghan stated at the time of the purchase, “Production of light arms has been low in the last ten years due to the prioritization of air and naval projects. The Iranian Foreign Ministry criticized President Donald Trump’s executive order banning Iranian nationals from entering the U.S. in a statement released on January 28. The Foreign Ministry announced that Iran “will take proportionate legal, consular, and political action” and that Iran will “take reciprocal measures” until the ban is lifted. The statement did not specify what those actions will be, however. The statement also called the ban “a great gift to extremists and their supporters” and added that the decision “to apply collective discrimination against citizens of Muslim countries will only serve to provide a fertile ground for more terrorist recruitment by deepening the ruptures and fault-lines which have been exploited by extremist demagogues.” The Foreign Ministry further criticized the ban as demonstrating “the baselessness of the U.S. claims of friendship with the Iranian people while only having issues with the Government of Iran.” (mfa.ir) (E)
