Key takeaway: Iranian officials continued to condemn the most recent round of U.S. sanctions.

President Hassan Rouhani responded to U.S. State Department and Treasury sanctions on Iranian entities and elements of the IRGC. Rouhani called the new sanctions a “contravention of the spirit and the text” of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and stated that Iran would “respond appropriately,” a likely reference to the continuation of Iran’s missile program, which the U.S. opposes. Rouhani’s comments follow the U.S. State Department also designating Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism in 2016 in its Country Reports on Terrorism, published on July 19.
