Ansar al Sharia is a Salafi-jihadi group established during the 2011 Libyan revolution that is part of al Qaeda’s network in Libya. Ansar al Sharia included two separate organizations: one in Derna and the now defunct group in Benghazi, as well as smaller affiliates throughout Libya. Individuals associated with Ansar al Sharia members carried out the September 2012 attacks on the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi.
