Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is a militant Islamist group that successfully overthrew Assad in December 2024 and established a new Syrian interim government under Ahmed al Shara at a self-proclaimed “victory conference” on January 29, 2025. Formerly linked to al-Qaeda, HTS has since distanced itself while consolidating power through governance and military dominance.

Despite being a US-designated terrorist group, HTS has at times collaborated with the US against ISIS while continuing to battle pro-regime forces, Turkish-backed militias, and Kurdish factions.
