Abdul Latif al-Rashid has served as the ninth president of Iraq since October 2022. A veteran Iraqi politician, he plays a largely ceremonial role in Iraq’s political system but has been involved in efforts to balance relations between Iran-aligned militias, the Iraqi government, and international actors.
On January 24, 2025, Rashid claimed that Iranian-backed Iraqi militias had ceased military activities in response to pressure from the Iraqi federal government, signaling an effort to assert state control over armed factions operating in the country.
