Ahmad Umar, also known as Abu Ubaidah, is the emir of al Shabaab. Umar was named the group’s leader in September 2014 after former emir Godane was killed in a US airstrike. Prior to becoming emir, Umar served as Godane’s assistant and as a regional al Shabaab governor. Umar shares Godane’s vision that al Shabaab’s efforts in Somalia are just one front in al Qaeda’s global jihad.
