Félix Tshisekedi
Story Stream
Félix Tshisekedi has been 5th President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since January 2018. Tshisekedi’s presidency marked the first peaceful transition of power in DRC since 1960 despite allegations that his victory resulted from election fraud. His ascension to the presidency was facilitated by a power-sharing agreement with DRC’s 4th President Joseph Kabila, which eventually broke down in 2021. Tshisekedi severed diplomatic relations with Rwanda in January 2025 and is unlikely to concede to M23 and Rwanda’s maximalist demands to legitimize their control of parts of eastern DRC.
Tshisekedi is the son of Étienne Tshisekedi, a long time opposition politician to successive DRC presidents who founded the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UPDS) party in 1982. Tshisekedi succeeded his father as UPDS party leader in 2018. Tshiskedi grew up in an upper-class family in Kinshasa and has close ties to Europe.
