Story Stream
Mahmoud al-Mashhadani is an Iraqi politician and the current Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives. A longtime figure in Sunni politics, he was first elected to parliament in 2005 as part of the Sunni-led Iraqi Accord Front.
Mashhadani has played a key role in shaping Sunni political alliances. His Iraqi Progress Party signaled openness to cross-sectarian partnership with the Shi’a Sadrist Movement ahead of the October 2025 parliamentary elections. Mashhadani has been accused of pushing legislative amendments without full discussion and controversially passing the General Amnesty Law. Over 130 parliamentarians signed a petition for his removal. Despite this, he remains a present and influential figure in Iraqi politics.
