Masoud Pezeshkian

Masoud Pezeshkian is a moderate Iranian politician and physician who has served as the ninth president of Iran since July 28, 2024. Pezeshkian is formerly Iranian minister of health (2001-2005) and a veteran of the Iran-Iraq War; he lost a presidential race in 2021.

Pezeshkian positioned himself as a moderate reformist aligned with the Hassan Rouhani administration (2013-2021) in the 2024 runoff election he won against hardliner Saeed Jalili. The timing of his presidency may allow him to influence the political landscape significantly in the midst of ongoing debates over Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s eventual succession. Pezeshkian describes himself as a “reformist principalist,” reflecting a mix of pragmatic governance and adherence to Iran’s revolutionary ideals.
