Yemen Security Review

• Police arrested al Qaeda leader Omar Ashour in al Mukalla, Hadramawt governorate.[1]

• Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula gunmen attacked a military facility in al Mukalla on June 8 with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms. They killed seven soldiers and wounded eleven before escaping.[2]

• Gunmen in Jind, Taiz governorate shot a man on his motorcycle. Colonel Sadeq al Muqabal, director of security in the district, said the suspect is already in custody.[3]

• Vandals in Jaradan, Ma’rib governorate cut power lines to Sana’a for the second time on June 10.[4]

• Two soldiers from the 27th Mechanized Brigade died while clearing farms of al Qaeda in Ghayl Ba Wazir, Hadramawt governorate. The military received information from a captured militant indicating the presence of al Qaeda on the farms.[5]

• Gunmen attacked the Sana’a-Ma’rib power lines in Naham on June 10.[6]

Horn of Africa Security Review

• Ahmed Madobe announced that he and officials from his newly created Jubbaland administration are willing to meet with the Somali government to come to an agreement on the recognition of a Jubbaland state. The Somali prime minister and defense minister said the Somali government will hold discussions with the warring clans to bring peace back to Kismayo.[7]

• Puntland Vice President Abdisamad Ali Shire accused the Somali federal government of inciting clan violence in Kismayo, Lower Jubba region on June 7 and 8. Shire said that Puntland would reconsider relations with the Somali federal government if the federal government does not allow the Jubbaland state formation.[8]

• Unknown gunmen killed two businessmen in Kismayo, Lower Jubba region on June 9, fleeing the scene.[9]

• Kenyan police shot and killed a suspected terrorist in Nairobi, Kenya on June 11. The man was believed to be behind the June 9 grenade attack that targeted a hotel in Eastleigh, Nairobi.[10]

• Somali and African Union Mission in Somalia troops conducted security operations in the Suqa Hoolaha and Heliwa districts of Mogadishu on June 11, seeking out al Shabaab militants. Several people were arrested but have not yet been charged.[11]

• Five hundred new graduates of an anti-riot police academy paraded through Mogadishu on June 10.[12]

• A ceremony was held at Villa Somalia, Mogadishu on June 11 to honor outgoing United Nations representative Augustine Mahiga. The Somali president thanked Mahiga for his work in helping rebuild Somalia.[13]
