Key takeaway: Tensions escalated between Iran and Israel after the Israeli Air Force intercepted and destroyed an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that entered Israeli airspace on February 10.
IRGC Deputy Commander Brigadier General Hossein Salami and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bahram Ghassemi did not confirm the reports of the Israeli strike against the Iranian drone and called the Israelis “liars.” Israeli Defense Forces also targeted 12 Iranian and Syrian targets in a “large-scale strike,” including four Iranian targets reportedly linked to the Iranian UAV program in Syria. Israel views the presence of Iranian forces and basing near its northeastern border as an immediate security threat and have taken military action to eliminate concerns, including a strike against an Iranian military base in al Kiswah, Rif Dimashq Governorate in southern Syria on December 2, 2017.
This Iran News Round Up predominantly covers events from February 10 - 12.

Rouhani: The people must settle disagreements through public referendums, not fighting.
President Hassan Rouhani said that the people should settle disagreements on social, cultural, economic issues through public referendums, not “fights or slogans” during a speech on February 11 marking the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. Article 59 of the Iranian Constitution permits the people to vote on “vital economic, political, social, and cultural issues” if two-thirds of the Parliament approves a request for a referendum. Rouhani stressed that the Constitution is Iran’s “touchstone” and that “many of the issues regarding freedoms and social relations are due to non-compliance with the Constitution.” Rouhani also called for political unity amongst principlists, reformists, and moderates in the coming year. Rouhani encouraged debate and differences of personal opinion regarding electoral candidates, and stressed that the results of elections must be respected as the people’s choice.
