Key takeaway: Ex-IRGC Commander Mohsen Rezaei censured President Hassan Rouhani’s stance towards President Donald Trump’s administration.
Rezaei stated that President Donald Trump may see Rouhani’s behavior towards the U.S. as “weakness” and an opportunity to exploit Iran, and called on Rouhani to adopt a more direct stance. Rezaei’s comments should be viewed in light of a possible run in the May presidential elections. Rezaei ran and lost to Rouhani in the 2013 elections, and was named recently to the shortlist of possible candidates to represent the Popular Front of the Islamic Revolution Forces, the coalition of conservative groups challenging President Rouhani. Rezaei’s comments regarding Trump nonetheless represent a marked departure from other regime officials’ statements, which have urged caution in judging the U.S. president.
This Iran News Round Up predominantly covers events from March 8.

Rezaei censures Rouhani’s stance towards the U.S. in open letter.
Expediency Discernment Council Secretary and former IRGC Commander Mohsen Rezaei criticized President Hassan Rouhani’s stance towards the U.S. under President Donald Trump’s administration. Rezaei indicated that Trump is very different than former President Barack Obama. Rezai stated that Rouhani’s policy under Obama will not work under the Trump administration, as such a policy could lead to “abuse by the U.S. and Israeli hawks.” Rezaei warned that Trump is attempting to “escape from Mr. Obama’s obligations” by means of “new accusations.” Rezaei called on Rouhani to “signal to Trump” that Iran is not weak, and warned that if Rouhani does not “speak to Mr. Trump” in a different way, his “current behavior” may “appear as weakness” to the U.S., and the U.S. will think that “any kind of pressure on the Iranian government will be effective.” Rezaei called on the Rouhani administration to “abandon such peace-seeking rhetoric” and adopt a “robust movement towards resuscitating” Iran’s economy.
- Rezaei also claimed that Rouhani’s foreign policy has been “limited to” the nuclear deal, and accused Rouhani of allowing the nuclear deal to transform “from a tactical affair to a strategic issue.” Rezaei also stated that the Rouhani cabinet’s rhetoric has “contributed little to the relieving the public of economic difficulties,” and criticized existing sanctions and the decrease in the value of Iran’s currency. Assembly of Experts criticizes Rouhani administration’s economic record.
The Assembly of Experts discussed Iran’s economic growth and other issues in a statement on March 8 at the conclusion of a two-day meeting. The statement read, “Despite the three branches of government’s extensive and positive measures towards the implementation of the general policies of the Resistance Economy, the fruits of these efforts have not been significantly or considerably reflected in the lives of the people.” The statement encouraged the government to “intensify the fight against corruption, cronyism, smuggling, and other vices” through strengthening domestic production efforts in “underprivileged regions” of Iran, “introducing wider reforms to fiscal and financial system, and bringing imports and exports to an order.”
- The statement also warned against the “infiltration” of Western ideas and culture into Iran and the importance of a large turnout in the forthcoming elections. The statement also reiterated Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other conservatives’ dismissal of reformists’ initiative to achieve “national reconciliation” in Iran. Motahari: The Assembly of Experts is not fulfilling its duties
Ali Motahari, a moderate-conservative politician and deputy parliament speaker, addressed a question of whether “the Assembly of Experts is carrying out its duties properly or not” during a speech at Esfahan University. He stated, “I believe the Assembly of Experts is not carrying out its duties in full, because the Constitution explicitly states that the Assembly of Experts should continuously monitor the Supreme Leader. Some think that using the word “monitor” regarding the Supreme Leader is an offense to the velayat-e faqih [guardianship of the jurist]. This is not the case.” He added that some Assembly members have not voiced their thoughts “because they have seen the fate of critics.” Motahari stressed that the Supreme Leader allows individuals to disagree with him. The Assembly of Experts is an elected body that is tasked with selecting the next Supreme Leader. (ISNA)

IRGC: Western ships, not IRGC, initiated March 4 encounter in the Strait of Hormuz.
IRGC Navy Lt. Cmdr. Mehdi Hashemi discussed Western media reports that “multiple” IRGC fast-attack craft came within 600 yards of the USNS Invincible and three Royal Navy vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and forced them to change direction. Hashemi called the Western media’s account of the story “false,” and claimed that the Invincible and the accompanying ships “pivoted from” the international maritime transit route and “towards” the IRGC vessels. Hashemi stated that “such actions can have irremediable consequences.” He also stated that the “presence of American and English ships in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz is associated with fear and terror and jeopardizes the security of this strategic region, which provides much of the world’s energy.” (Press TV) (E) (Ghatreh)
