The Afghan Taliban is a Sunni insurgent group in Afghanistan. Currently, their leader is Mawlawi Hibatullah Akhundzada. From 1996 to 2001, the Taliban held approximately 75% of Afghanistan where they established an Islamic state that employed a strict version of Shariah law. Currently, the Taliban is attempting to assert themselves as a legitimate political entity within Afghanistan.
