On September 3, 2014, Ayman al Zawahiri announced the establishment of a new Pakistan-based affiliate that would oversee operations in the neighboring countries of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar: al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). The announcement came just two months after the Islamic State’s declaration of a caliphate under Abu Bakr al Baghdadi on June 29, 2014.
