Yemen: Saudi military intercepts al Houthi-fired scud missile; UN confirms Yemeni peace talks to begin in Geneva on June 14

Yemen Security Brief

  • Al Houthi militants fired a scud missile at the Saudi Arabian city of Khamees Mushait on June 6. The Saudi military reported that it successfully intercepted the missile with two Patriot missiles. The al Houthi movement confirmed the attack via al Masira news.[1]
  • The UN confirmed on June 6 that it will host Yemeni peace talks in Geneva on June 14. Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi has emphasized that the talks will be focused only on how to implement UN Resolution 2216, which calls for the al Houthis to disarm and withdraw from seized territory.[2]

Horn of Africa Security Brief

  • Ahlu Sunna wa al Jama’a (ASWJ) militants seized the capital of Galgadud region, Dhusamareb, on June 7 and captured bases from Somali government forces. The Somali government has vowed to retake the town from the militants. ASWJ is a paramilitary group opposed to Somalia’s federalization process.[3]
