Iran News Round Up
The Iran News Round Up ran from February 2009-September 2018. Visit the Iran File for the latest analysis.
Key takeaway: Iran is likely to exert considerable economic and diplomatic pressure to prevent any future declaration of Iraqi Kurdistan’s independence.
Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani stated that Iran would “terminate all military and security agreements” and close all border crossings with Iraqi Kurdistan in the event of Iraqi Kurdistan’s secession from Iraq. Shamkhani also warned that Iraqi Kurdistan’s secession from Iraq would result in the “serious alteration in the existing cooperation” between Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran. Iraqi Kurdistan is scheduled to hold a referendum on its independence on September 25.
Iran’s closure of its border crossings with Iraqi Kurdistan would likely impose significant economic pressure upon Iraqi Kurdistan. Shamkhani’s threat to close the borders is likely aimed at keeping Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) head Massoud Barzani from declaring independence in the event the referendum passes. Turkey has also threatened Iraqi Kurdistan with major economic pressure.
This Iran News Round Up predominantly covers events from September 16-18.
Shamkhani warns of Iranian response to “illegal” Kurdish separatism.
Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Ali Shamkhani warned that the Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum would instigate instability. Shamkhani stressed that Iran’s “security and military agreements” with Iraqi Kurdistan exist by virtue of Iraqi Kurdistan’s relationship with the central government of Iraq. Shamkhani stated that Iran would therefore “terminate” these agreements as well as close border crossings with Iraqi Kurdistan in the event of a secession of Iraqi Kurdistan from Iraq. Shamkhani also stated that any “damage” to Iraq’s unity as a result of the referendum “would lead to the revision of and serious alteration in the existing cooperation between Iran and Iraq’s Kurdistan region.” (Press TV) (E) (Defa Press)
