On Friday, reports indicated that a U.S. drone strike in North Waziristan on April 17th killed al Qaeda intelligence and security chief Abu Ubaidah Abdullah Al Adam. Abdullah was a Palestinian, raised in Saudi Arabia, who replaced Abu Jehad Al Misri after Misri was killed in an North Waziristan drone strike in 2008[1]

Pakistani authorities reported on Friday their plans to close the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan during the general election on May 11, to help prevent terrorist attacks during voting.[2]

On Friday, militants opened fire on and killed four policemen in Hygam village, north of Srinagar, in Indian-administered Kashmir. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.[3]

On Friday, at least eleven people were killed and over forty injured in an attack on an Awami National Party (ANP) office in Karachi’s Mominabad area just before a political meeting. Earlier on Friday, two people were injured when militants threw a grenade at an ANP candidate in Muzaffarabad Colony in Landhi, Karachi.[4]

On Thursday, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants bombed a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) electoral office in North Nazimabad, Karachi, killing five people and injuring twelve others. All of the casualties were members of the MQM. MQM leadership announced a day of mourning on Friday, shutting down much of Karachi with general strikes and closed schools.

Five more people were killed in targeted attacks throughout Karachi on Thursday. In a separate episode of political violence on Thursday, militants shot and killed a Pakistani Muslim Leage (PML-N) member in Model Colony, Karachi. Another MQM member was gunned down near Safoora Chowrangi. In a separate incident, motorcyclists shot and killed a man in Sakhi Hassan as he was returning from teaching at a school. Elsewhere, a man was killed outside his house in Korangi after motorcyclists opened fire on him. Another man was killed when motorcyclists shot and killed him in near Akbari Masjid in Banaras.[5]

On Thursday, Karachi police and counter terrorism units arrested eight suspected militants near Ghani Chowrangi, four of whom were allegedly TTP members.[6]
